WHO (World Health Organization) released a paper on August 3rd, 2020 with "Considerations for the provision of essential oral health services in the context of COVID-19". This interim guidance had information on what patients should expect at the dental office during this Covid-19 time. A small part of the paper was emphasized by the media and created some scare in patients. In the paper it states "WHO advises that routine non-essential oral health care – which usually includes oral health check-ups, dental cleanings and preventive care – be delayed". The media focused on this and not the sentence which states "until there has been sufficient reduction in COVID-19 transmission rates from community transmission to cluster cases or according to official recommendations at national, sub-national or local level." We encourage those to stay informed about the transmission rates in your local and community levels. Unless there is a drastic surge in cases or aggressive community spread, you should be safe going to the dentist, providing that dentists is following the current guidelines set forth by the CDC and other governing bodies. The American Dental Association also responded to the WHO comments.
